Operationalising ARISE biodiversity initiative
Project to help operationalise the ARISE biodiversity research program; a Naturalis-led initiative to analyze Dutch biodiversity and help monitor and steer ecosystem restoration in the Netherlands.

We partnered with the strategy team at Enexis to co-develop a tailored ESG strategy. Our work covered impact analysis, roadmap design, governance structure and stakeholder alignment.

Climate
CSR strategy
KPN aims to be net zero by 2040 and to move toward circular operations. We worked alongside the sustainability team to translate these ambitions into a strategic roadmap, and designed a transformation programme for executive leadership.

Development of a biodiversity strategy in line with wider sustainability ambitions. We defined targets, timelines and governance structures, and aligned the approach with CSRD requirements (ESRS E4).

Green Fiber Hub
We teamed up with KPN and Naturalis to develop the first 'nature-inclusive fibre-optic hub'. The project resulted in a functioning hub that supports local biodiversity and inspires other utility buildings.

Daan Helming joined grid operator Stedin as interim sustainability manager. He helped embed ESG thinking across the organisation, aligned ambitions and supported long-term strategic development.

CO2 Governance
Development of a governance model for CO₂ and climate policy to align with future regulations and SBTi. This resulted in a transition plan that meets CSRD requirements and clarifies roles, structures and decision making.

Carbon SPV set-up
Supporting the set-up of the 'Smallholder Carbon Capital foundation', meant to channel carbon-credit revenues from agroforestry projects in East Africa to smallholder farmers.

About our name
On Christmas Eve 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 became the first humans to orbit the Moon. As they came round its far side, they watched the Earth rise over the lunar horizon and reached for a camera.
The photograph they took, Earthrise, showed the whole planet at once: finite, luminous, without borders. It is often credited with helping launch the modern environmental movement.
That shift in perspective is our starting point. Seeing the system whole is what makes it possible to change it.
Who we are
Studio Earthrise was founded by Daan Helming and Dirk Bijl de Vroe, who have collaborated for more than a decade.
Founder
Dirk Bijl de Vroe
Dirk has over 15 years of experience in sustainability as a consultant, entrepreneur, and sustainability manager at grid operator Stedin. Other companies he founded or was/is associated with include Treebytree, The Oikos Collective and FamilyForest.
He is as a sustainability strategist for various organizations, and develops programs that bridge the gap between people, nature, and society.

Daan Helming
Daan Helming has over 14 years of experience in the field of consultancy and sustainability. He advises various corporates and (semi-)public organizations and is currently the program lead for infrastructure at the Collectief Natuurinclusief, which focuses on the transition to a nature-inclusive society.
Besides Studio Earthrise he also co-founded The Oikos Collective.
Analyst
David de Bruin
David de Bruin is passionate about sustainability. He has worked with organizations such as Stedin, Groen Licht, and Sungevity, gaining hands-on experience in sustainable operations, energy transition strategy, and behavioural change.
He's the most hands-on of us all, contributing a large share of his time together with his girlfriend to regenerative projects in the Netherlands and abroad.
